Pigeon Valley connects Göreme to Uchisar with thousands of pigeon houses carved into cliffs—a unique valley with agricultural history. This guide covers the hike, pigeon houses, and everything you need to know.
YES - if you have time for a second valley hike.
Why you should visit: ✅ Unique attraction (thousands of pigeon houses), ✅ Easy scenic hike (Göreme to Uchisar), ✅ Historical agricultural significance, ✅ Less touristy than other valleys, ✅ FREE, ✅ Connects two main towns (practical hike)
Why it's called "Pigeon Valley": Thousands of dovecotes (pigeon houses) carved into cliffs, Locals attracted pigeons for their droppings (used as fertilizer), Pigeons still live in many houses today, Traditional agricultural practice (centuries old)
Priority ranking: Rose Valley > Red Valley > Pigeon Valley
Bottom line: If you're doing 2+ valley hikes, add Pigeon Valley. But if only one valley, choose Rose or Red Valley (more dramatic scenery).
Where It Is: Between Göreme and Uchisar (4 km), Parallel to main road (but lower in valley), South of town centers
Viewpoints: Pigeon Valley Viewpoint #1: On road near Göreme (quick stop, 5 min), Pigeon Valley Viewpoint #2: On road near Uchisar (panoramic, 10 min), Both FREE, roadside pull-offs
Appearance: Small carved holes in cliff faces, Hundreds of holes covering entire rock walls, Some painted white (traditional marking), Square or rectangular openings, Multiple "floors" of houses
How They Work: Pigeons nest inside carved holes, Cool interior (natural air conditioning), Protected from predators, Safe breeding environment
Agricultural Purpose: Pigeon droppings used as fertilizer for vineyards and fields, Rich in nitrogen (excellent for grapes), Locals collected droppings regularly, Sold or used for crops
Historical Timeline: Started centuries ago (exact date unclear), Peak use: 18th-20th century, Declined: Mid-20th century (chemical fertilizers replaced), Today: Some still used, most abandoned
Distance: 4 km (2.5 miles) one-way, Duration: 1.5-2 hours, Difficulty: Easy (flat valley floor, minimal elevation), Trail surface: Dirt path, some rocky sections, Direction: Either way works (Göreme→Uchisar or Uchisar→Göreme)
Starting from Göreme (Most Common): Trailhead: South side of Göreme, Near Open Air Museum road, Look for "Güvercinlik Vadisi" (Pigeon Valley) signs, 10-minute walk from town center
Trail Section 1: Göreme End (30 minutes) - What You'll See: Valley floor with walking path, First pigeon houses in cliffs, Fairy chimneys on both sides, Some small vineyards. Scenery: Open valley (not narrow like Rose/Red), Good views of surrounding formations, Pigeon houses become more numerous as you walk
Trail Section 2: Mid-Valley (40 minutes) - Pigeon House Concentration: Cliff faces covered with hundreds of holes, Both sides of valley, Can see pigeons flying in/out, Some houses painted white. Photo Opportunities: Close-ups of pigeon house patterns, Cliff faces with hundreds of holes, Valley views with houses visible
Trail Section 3: Uchisar End (20 minutes) - Approaching Uchisar: Valley narrows slightly, Uchisar Castle visible ahead, Trail ascends gently toward town, More dramatic rock formations. End Point: Exit at Uchisar town, 5-minute walk to Uchisar Castle, Cafes and restaurants nearby
Option 1: Walk Back (4 km, 1.5 hours) - Same trail in reverse, Good if you enjoyed it and have energy
Option 2: Taxi Back (€2-3) - Uchisar to Göreme: ₺80-120, 10-minute drive, Most common choice
Option 3: Explore Uchisar, Then Taxi - Visit Uchisar Castle (30 min), Have lunch/coffee, Then taxi back
